04Full review

J. Herbin stands as the oldest ink house in the world, tracing its origins back to 1670 in Paris, and that heritage of craftsmanship is evident the moment you unscrew the cap on one of their bottles. The ink flows with a smooth, well-behaved consistency that fountain pen users prize, gliding through fine nibs without feathering or excessive bleed-through on reasonably good paper. Colors range from classic archival tones like Bleu Myosotis and Rouge Caroubier to more adventurous shades such as Vert Empire and Emerald of Chivor, giving calligraphers and everyday writers alike a palette that spans subdued elegance to vivid expression. The formulation is water-based and gentle on pen internals, making it a dependable choice for both vintage fountain pens and modern piston-fillers.

The signature Drouot bottle design deserves particular mention, as its wide mouth and interior pen rest let you tilt the bottle to draw ink from even the last few drops without dipping your nib awkwardly into a nearly empty well. This thoughtful engineering reflects J. Herbin's understanding of the practical rituals fountain pen enthusiasts go through daily, turning ink filling into a cleaner, more satisfying experience rather than a frustrating chore. Bottles typically come in 30ml or 50ml sizes, giving users room to experiment with multiple hues without committing to large quantities, which suits collectors who enjoy rotating colors according to mood, season, or correspondence.

Beyond the standard line, J. Herbin offers the Perle des Encres and 1670 Anniversary collections, which introduce shimmering gold or silver particles suspended in richly saturated bases, ideal for calligraphy work where light-catching sheen adds visual drama to finished pieces. These specialty inks pair beautifully with broad nibs, flex pens, and dip pens used in traditional penmanship and modern calligraphy alike. Whether you're a letter writer seeking a reliable everyday ink or a calligrapher chasing dramatic sheen and shading, J. Herbin's centuries-old expertise translates into a product line that balances historical authenticity with the practical demands of contemporary fountain pen culture.

A timeless classic for good reason

I've tried dozens of inks, but J. Herbin remains my go-to for daily writing. The Vert Empire shade is stunning and flows beautifully in my Pilot Custom 74.

Great color, minor feathering issue

The color saturation is gorgeous, but I noticed some feathering on my cheaper notebook paper. Works perfectly on Clairefontaine though.

Love the bottle almost as much as the ink

The square glass bottle is so elegant it sits proudly on my desk. Ink flows smoothly and dries at a reasonable pace without clogging my converter.

Reliable but not waterproof

Smooth writing experience and lovely color, but I learned the hard way that it smears if you spill water on your notes. Otherwise very happy with it.
